About
Ordono the First of Asturias began the repopulation of the emptied Duero valley, pushing settlers into the no-man's-land the Arab conquest had left, and fortified Leon and Astorga against the raiding summers. He died in 866, and his son Alfonso made the little mountain kingdom great.
