About
Otto I 'the Illustrious' (d.912), Duke of Saxony, held the Saxon duchy in the last years of the Carolingian east and was, the chroniclers say, offered the German crown in 911 and declined it on account of his age. The offer his line did not refuse: his son Henry the Fowler took the kingship eight years later, and the Ottonian emperors bear this Otto's name. He is our ancestor through Henry.
