About
Ramiro the Second of Leon broke the army of the Caliph at Simancas in 939 - the high-water mark of tenth-century Christian arms, after which even Cordoba treated Leon with caution. The chroniclers called him the Devil for the terror he inspired across the frontier. He died in 951; his son Ordono the Third continues this line.
