About
Ranulf II, Count of Poitou, took the title of King of Aquitaine in the chaos after Charles the Fat's deposition, and held his great duchy apart from the crumbling empire; he died in 890, poisoned, as more than one chronicler believed. From him descend the dukes of Aquitaine down to the Troubadour and Eleanor herself - and this family with them.
