About
Richard de Clare, fifth Earl of Hertford and Earl of Gloucester, was one of the greatest magnates of Henry the Third's England, holding lands across the west country, the Welsh march and Ireland. He is a direct ancestor of this family twice over: through his son Thomas of Thomond, whose daughter Margaret carries this line, and, at one remove, through his other son Gilbert the Red Earl, whose daughter Elizabeth married Roger Damory. Those two women were first cousins, which places the baron of the paternal name-legend one step from the maternal bloodline.
