✓ as named: Richard de Stafford, Lord Stafford of Clifton, father of Catherine Arderne. The Staffords of Clifton descend from Sir Richard Stafford, younger son of Edmund, 1st Lord Stafford (already in the tree); whether Catherine's father was Sir Richard (d. 1380) or his son Sir Richard (d. 1381) needs CP XII/1 'Stafford of Clifton' - not linked. TOP - nothing further wired. Source: Ormerod, History of Cheshire (1819), vol. III, p.301 chart 'Arderne and Stanley of Aldford and Elford' (Elford monuments, Dugdale's Baronage, Cheshire pedigrees) and vol. II pp.38-39 'Arderne of Aldford, Alvanley and Harden', read 2 Nov 2026 (archive.org djvu text). [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 2 Nov 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] ||2 Nov 2026 - IDENTIFIED AND JOINED (✓)|| CP 1st ed. VII p.223: Richard de Stafford of Clifton Camville, younger son of Edmund, 1st Lord Stafford, and Margaret Basset (Wikipedia/DNB agree); m. (1) Isabel, da. of Sir Richard Vernon of Haddon, (2) before 1357 Matilda (d.s.p. 1400); d. 13 Aug 1380. His eldest son Sir Richard junior d.s.p. before him. The barony's representation 'devolved on the issue and representatives of his great aunt Katharine, only da. of Richard de Stafford, wife of Sir John Ardern, of Elford, co. Stafford' - n.(f): 'Sir John Ardern, her s. and h. left an only da. and h., Maud, who m. Sir Thomas Stanley' - exactly Ormerod's Arderne chart. So Catherine's father is the elder Richard (d. 1380), and she married JOHN, not Thomas, de Arderne (Wikipedia's 'Thomas de Arderne' is not followed: CP and Ormerod agree against it). RING: the Arderne line now joins the Stafford line at Edmund, 1st Lord Stafford. TOP removed. Source: G.E.C., Complete Peerage, 1st ed. vol. VII (1896), 'Stafford' (barony, Richard de Stafford of Clifton Camville) p.223 and n.(f) (Wikisource page image transcript, read 2 Nov 2026). The 2nd ed. has no separate 'Stafford of Clifton' article.
