About
Richard FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel, was knighted by Edward I, received the sword of the county of Sussex in 1289, and fought through the king's Welsh, French and Scottish wars before dying in 1302, not yet thirty-six. His marriage was the exotic one of his generation: Alasia di Saluzzo, an Italian marquess's daughter brought from the Alps to Sussex, and their daughter Eleanor married the first Percy of Alnwick.
