About
Richard II 'the Good' (d.1026), Duke of Normandy, made the duchy a European power: he married his sister Emma to two successive kings of England; Æthelred the Unready and Cnut; sheltered the exiled English princes, and lent his fleet and sister to the politics of the northern world, while at home founding the great abbeys of Fécamp and Mont-Saint-Michel's reform. Grandfather of the Conqueror, he is our ancestor several times over.
