Robert de Grandmesnil fought beside Roger de Toni against Roger de Beaumont, took a wound in the bowels, and died of it three weeks later, dividing his lands between his sons Hugh and Robert. He was buried outside the church of St Mary at Norrei.

✓ ORDERIC FIRST-HAND (Forester trans. vol.1 pp.419-20, read 14 Sep 2026): ROBERT DE GRANDMESNIL (d. 18 June, c.1040); m. HAWISE dau. of Giroie (vol.1 p.413: 'Hawise... was married to Robert de Grand-mesnil, by whom she had three sons, Hugh, Robert, and Arnold'); father of Hugh (our line) and of Abbot Robert of St-Evroult. Orderic was a monk of the abbey this family refounded - as close to family papers as the 11th century gets. Added 14 Sep 2026.
