About
Robert II 'the Pious' (c.972-1031), King of France, was the second Capetian king, a lifelong singer in church choirs who was nonetheless excommunicated for marrying his cousin Bertha of Burgundy and later presided over the first burning of heretics in medieval France, at Orléans in 1022. Taught by Gerbert of Aurillac; the future Pope Sylvester II; he was among the most learned kings of his age. His third marriage, to Constance of Arles, gives us our line through Henry I.
