About

Rohese de Verdun was a great heiress who kept her own name and made her husbands' sons take it - the Verdun lands in Ireland and England stayed hers. She founded Grace Dieu priory in Leicestershire, where she was buried in 1247, and local memory made her formidable enough that her ghost was still being reported centuries later. Her marriage to the second Chief Butler of Ireland carried her inheritance into the Butler orbit, and this line descends from their son.
