About

Sancho Garces the Second, called Abarca after the rough mountain sandal of his people - the nickname a compliment to a king who marched with them - held Pamplona through the dangerous years of the Caliphate's zenith, bending when he had to and surviving. He died in 994; his marriage to Urraca Fernandez closed the ring between Navarre and Castile that this tree carries wired.
