About
Sancho III 'the Desired' (1134-1158), King of Castile, reigned barely a year; long enough to found the military Order of Calatrava, Iberia's first native crusading order, born when the Templars gave up the fortress and a Cistercian abbot took it. Dead at twenty-four, he left an infant son, Alfonso VIII, the future victor of Las Navas. He is our ancestor through that son's daughters.
