About

Alfonso the Eighth of Castile won the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, the victory that broke the Almohad power in Spain and opened the way to the reconquest of the south. He married Eleanor of England and founded the first university in Spain, at Palencia. He was the great-grandfather of Eleanor of Castile, Queen of England.
