About
Berengaria of Castile ruled Castile in her own right, and then did something rarer: she resigned the crown to her son Ferdinand and went on governing beside him for thirty years, which the chroniclers of the age found almost impossible to describe politely. She was a granddaughter of Henry the Second of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, so this family reaches them a second time through her.
