About
Sir Anthony St Leger, Knight of the Garter, was three times Lord Deputy of Ireland, under Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary, and the great manager of surrender and regrant - the policy by which Gaelic lords traded their old titles for English earldoms. It was St Leger who steered the act of 1541 that made Henry VIII King of Ireland, the constitutional hinge of four centuries. He married Agnes Warham, the archbishop's niece, died in 1559, and was buried at Ulcombe among his ancestors. This line descends, with a certain justice, from the son he disinherited.
