About
Sir Maurice de Berkeley, a younger son of the imprisoned second Baron, was granted the manor of Stoke Gifford by Edward III in 1337, and from that grant grew the Berkeleys of Stoke Gifford, the cadet house from which this line descends - a quieter branch than the castle, and one that kept clear of murdering kings. He died in 1347.
