Sviatoslav the First of Kiev spent almost his entire reign at war, destroying the Khazar empire and campaigning in the Balkans, and he is said to have slept on the ground with his saddle for a pillow. He was ambushed and killed by the Pechenegs at the Dnieper rapids, and their prince had his skull made into a drinking cup.
