Thomas Damery

Thomas Damery was born at Glandore in 1860, in Jones country, which is its own quiet foreshadowing of a marriage two generations later. He was a builder's clerk, and when he married Charlotte Louisa Channell at Ballymodan church in Bandon in September 1888 the register recorded his father as James Damery, labourer. Those two words demolished thirty years of the family's believed pedigree and replaced it with a better one. He is the man who put the family's hand back on the ladder: his own children reached the 1911 census as clerks and typists. He died in 1947.

Death: Cork civil death register 1947, No. 37 (cert. 04208198); aged 85 (b. ~1862), married, Clerk; myocarditis / cardiac failure; informant his son [Thomas] William Damery, present at death; reg. 17 Nov 1947.

Glandore, Church of Ireland, Builder's Clerk (for the Trustees of the late Sam Hill, builder); married 37 years; 9 children born, 7 living (NB the 1911 census records 7 born / 7 living, all children alive - so the "9" is likely an enumeration slip, not evidence of 2 deaths). Household: wife Charlotte (b. Suffolk); children Ellen (Typist), Thomas (Timber Merchant's clerk), Alfred (Clerk/bookkeeper, Cooke & Son, Cycle Agents), Edward (Carpenter) and Clara.
