About
Thomas Lane of Bentley Hall in Staffordshire was the father of Colonel John Lane and of Jane Lane, who rode Charles the Second to safety after the battle of Worcester in 1651. He is NOT an ancestor of this family. He was entered as one for a single day in July 2026, on the strength of a sentence in Burke's, and removed when the documents disproved it. He is kept here as claimed kin, because the Irish Lanes wore his family's coat undifferenced for two centuries and the kinship remains probable, even though this particular join is dead.
Research notes
Thomas Lane, Esq., of Bentley Hall, Staffordshire (d. 1660); m. Anne, eldest dau. of Walter Bagot of Blithfield (sister of Sir Harvey Bagot, Bt, 'who suffered so severely by his attachment to the royal cause'). Children per Burke's LG 'Lane of King's Bromley': COL. JOHN LANE (who received the fugitive Charles II at Bentley after Worcester; the family arms afterwards augmented with the three lions of England on a canton, the crest a strawberry roan horse bearing the royal crown between its forelegs; by tradition offered a peerage and declined it); WILLIAM, 'from whom the Irish branch of the family derives' (OUR LINE, grade ~); Richard, a groom of the bedchamber; JANE LANE, 'celebrated by her spirited conduct in saving the life of King Charles II after the battle of Worcester' (m. Sir Clement Fisher of Packington); Withy, Anne, Mary. The King's Bromley pedigree above Thomas runs by Burke's to the 14th century (Richard de la Lone, 1315) and by Holinshed's tradition to the Conquest - recorded here as the senior family's pedigree, not entered as individuals. STATUS (final regrade, July 2026): CLAIMED KIN, NOT PROVEN ANCESTOR. The link from the Tipperary founder William Lane to this family has been DETACHED after Gregory King's c.1683 pedigree showed Thomas's son William of Shelton alive in England in 1683 with daughters only - see William Lane (I99037). Thomas, Anne Bagot, and the Bagot/Cave/Cecil generations above are retained in this file as the SENIOR FAMILY THE IRISH LANES CLAIMED AND WHOSE ARMS THEY BORE, pending the discriminating records. Added July 2026; detached July 2026.
