About
Urraca (1079-1126), Queen of León and Castile in her own right, was one of medieval Europe's first reigning queens; 'empress of all Spain' in her charters. Her second marriage, to Alfonso the Battler of Aragon, collapsed into open war between wife and husband; she fought it, and the rebel nobles, and her own half-sister's faction, for seventeen years and died still reigning. Her son by her first marriage, Alfonso VII, continues our line.
