About

William de Warenne, third Earl of Surrey, took the cross with Louis VII and was slain by Turkish skirmishers in the mountain defiles above Laodicea in January 1148, covering the rearguard of the Second Crusade's doomed march. He was about thirty. His only child Isabel carried the earldom to two royal husbands in turn, and his widow Ela Talvas remarried the Earl of Salisbury - so that both halves of his broken household stand among this family's ancestors.
