Each came in by its own door, and nearly all of them through women’s lines, converging at last in the Hunt family and descending through White, Jones and Damery: · the de Clares carry Ireland, and through Henry the First and the Counts of Flanders, Alfred the Great, Robert the Second of France and Charlemagne; · the de Veres (via Jane Vere) carry Charlemagne a second time by the Vermandois, and with him Italy, France, Kiev, Sweden, Germany (the Ottonians) and — through Owain Glyndŵr — the crown of Powys; · the Butlers and Kildare FitzGeralds carry Edward the First, Scotland and the crowns of Gwynedd and Deheubarth; via Eleanor of Castile — Castile, León and Navarre; via Eleanor of Aquitaine — Anscarid Italy; via Eleanor of Provence — Aragón; · the Plantagenets bring one crown more — through Henry the Second’s father, Fulk of Anjou, the Kingdom of Jerusalem; · Sadb Ní Fáeláin carries the Uí Dúnlainge kings of Leinster, the deepest chain of all; Aife of Osraige brings the Osraige kings, the FitzPatricks’ royal house; the O’Briens carry Brian Boru and Munster. Four saints stand in the blood: St Margaret of Scotland (28×), St Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury (33×), St Olga of Kiev (31×) and St Ferdinand III of Castile and León (23×). In their company: Lady Godiva, William Marshal — the greatest knight of the age — Æthelred the Unready, Edgar the Peaceful, David I of Scots and Eleanor of Provence. And El Cid himself — Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (29×), greatest soldier of medieval Spain — comes down through his daughter Cristina to the kings of Navarre and Castile, and so to Eleanor of Castile. Deeper still, two emperors: Lothair I (33×), who kept the imperial crown when the Franks were partitioned at Verdun in 843 — by a descent graded probable, not proven — and Alfonso VII of Castile and León, Emperor of All Spain (27×). Charlemagne now arrives by hundreds of roads (263 at the last count), three of them wholly independent; the House of Wessex and King Henry the Second each by two — a cross-check many times over.
