About

Ailill mac Dunlainge was a son of Dunlaing of the fort at Naas, one of the two brothers with whom the fortunes of the Ui Dunlainge begin. The old king-lists crown him King of Leinster and give him a death in 527, but modern scholars read those crowns as embroidery added later by his descendants, and take the brothers for what they more likely were: lords of northern Leinster on the rise. He is nonetheless among the best-witnessed Irishmen of his century. The genealogies name him; the Life of Patrick has the saint baptise him and his brother at the well north of their father's fort; the battle tradition puts the brothers at Cell Osnada in 490, fighting beside their mother's people on the day the King of Munster fell; and the Annals of Ulster carry the family's pedigree in his brother's own obit.

Research notes

*** CURRENT GRADE - READ FIRST (15 Sep 2026): FILIATION ✓ ANNAL-STRATUM (AU U527.2 obit of his brother: 'Illann son of Dunlang...'), supported by four independent strands; KINGSHIP ~ RETROJECTED (a locally prominent north-Leinster dynast; 'King of Leinster' is later king-list amendment); d.527 = king-list date, not a contemporary obit. ⚠ Tigernach's 'mac Dungaili' is a scribal variant - never 'correct' the father to Dungal. Layers below = audit trail; read to the end. *** ✓ DOCUMENTED (Source: the Uí Fáeláin / Uí Dúnlainge royal genealogy of Leinster, attested in the Irish Annals and the medieval tracts (Book of Leinster; Rawlinson B502 - Genelach h-Úa n-Dúnlainge); supplied 23 Jul 2026.): AILILL MAC DUNLAINGE, KING OF LEINSTER; d. 527. Father of Cormac. Direct ancestor. Added 23 Jul 2026. || REGRADED 15 Sep 2026 (DIB 'Illann' a4194 + 'Dunlaing' a2845, read first-hand): the MAN and the FILIATION stand (DIB: son of Dunlaing by Cuach; came to prominence late 5th c.); the TITLE softens - his and his brother Illann's 'kingship of Leinster' is likely a later amendment of the king-lists in Ui Dunlainge's interest; read him as a locally prominent north-Leinster dynast whose d. 527 is a king-list date, not a contemporary obit. Grade now: filiation ✓-per-genealogies (DIB-carried), kingship ~ retrojected. || HAGIOGRAPHICAL CORROBORATION ADDED 15 Sep 2026 (Vita Tripartita Sancti Patricii, Part 3 - 9th-c. compilation on the older Patrician dossier): the Tripartite Life has PATRICK AT NAAS, tent pitched 'on the green of the fort, east of the road', BAPTISING AILILL AND ILLANN, SONS OF DUNLAING, at the well north of the dun - and veiling Ailill's daughters MOGAIN and FEIDELM as consecrated virgins. Grade of this witness, stated precisely: hagiography, centuries later, built to legitimise - it CANNOT restore the softened kingship grades and does not date the baptism as event. What it DOES do: attest the FILIATION (Ailill + Illann sons of Dunlaing) in a strand INDEPENDENT of the king-lists and genealogies, fixed by the 9th century at latest, and confirm NAAS as the dynastic seat. The filiation rung now has two unrelated witnesses (genealogical corpus + Patrician tradition); the crown stays ~. ◈-box candidate for the family edition: the ancestor baptised at a named well outside his father's fort, his daughters veiled at the same water. || THIRD WITNESS STRAND BANKED 15 Sep 2026 - CELL OSNADA, graded rung by rung: (a) AU 490.2 (CELT, verified): 'The battle of Cenn Losnada in Mag Fea, in which fell Oengus son of Nad-fraich, king of Mumu, AS CUANU HAS WRITTEN' - the battle, the Munster king's death, and the rare early-source citation (ut Cuana scripsit) = solid annal-stratum fact ✓; (b) the VICTORS - Illann and Ailill sons of Dunlaing, with Eochaid Guinech of the UI BAIRRCHE (per the Tigernach variant + Leinster tradition, NOT the bare AU entry) = tradition-attributed ~✓, a half-grade below the battle. INTERNAL COHERENCE: Eochaid Guinech's Ui Bairrche = the sept of the brothers' MOTHER Cuach per DIB - the brothers fight beside their mother's people, exactly the Ui Dunlainge/Ui Bairrche association the DIB independently records; timeline biologically clean (active 490, Illann d.527 list-date). The generation now stands on THREE independent strands: genealogies (structure), Patrician tradition (Naas baptism), battle tradition (490, early chronicle behind it). Crowns still ~; the MEN are as firm as the 5th century allows. || FOURTH WITNESS STRAND - THE STRONGEST CLASS (15 Sep 2026, contributed by the auditing chat, verified vs CELT): AU U527.2 reads 'Death of ILLANN SON OF DUNLANG son of Ennae Nia son of Bresal Belach' - the ANNAL OBIT ITSELF carries the filiation, with two further pedigree rungs attached. The sons-of-Dunlaing rung is therefore ANNAL-STRATUM, not merely tract-and-hagiography - held with two honest caveats: (a) the pre-550 AU layer is retrospectively compiled, so annal-stratum is not contemporary; (b) the obit is ILLANN's, his brother - AILILL's own d.527 stays a king-list date as regraded; the filiation strengthens via the brother, the crowns stay ~. SCRIBAL-VARIANT TRAP LOGGED: Tigernach's Irish reads 'mac DUNGAILI' (Mac Niocaill: 'Illann son of Dungal') - a scribal variant, provably: AU's obit, the genealogies and the Tripartite Life agree on Dunlaing, and no Dungal stands in the Leinster pedigree to be his father; do not let a future pass 'correct' the father to Dungal. COLOUR banked: Tigernach has Oengus's queen EITHNE UATHACH ('the Horrible'), dau. of Crimthann of the rival Ui Cheinnselaig, falling WITH him at Cell Osnada; and AU U528.2 has Mac Erca beating the Laigin at CENN EICH the next year - the 490 alliance lasted about as long as such things do.
