About
Dunlaing mac Enda Niada gave his name to the Ui Dunlainge, the dynasty that held the kingship of Leinster in rotation for three hundred years from their seat at Naas. He is said to have lived in the time of Saint Patrick, in the late fifth century. He is the deepest rung this family's documented tree reaches on any side, Irish or English, and he stands forty-four generations above the present day. Above him the genealogies continue, through Enna Nia and Bresal Belach to Cathair Mor and eventually to myth, and that is where this family stops counting. His wife Cuach of the Ui Bairrche, mother of his sons, now stands beside him in the tree.
Research notes
||CONSIDERED AND DECLINED, 9 Oct 2026 - THE ENNA NIA DECISION (final, Aynsley's ruling: leave well alone)|| The question of wiring his father ENNAE NIA and grandfather BRESAL BELACH was fully examined: FOR - the AU U527.2 string, CELT re-verified first-hand from the page ('Illann son of Dunlang son of Ennae Nia son of Bresal Belach'), DIB's plain statement of the filiation, and the concordant genealogies. AGAINST, and decisive - (1) AU's pre-550 layer is RETROSPECTIVE, compiled partly from the genealogical tradition itself, so the string may be the pedigree wearing an annal's clothing; (2) the house person-attestation rule: every wired ~ rung elsewhere is an independently attested PERSON (own obit, own reign) with an inferred filiation - Ennae Nia is attested NOWHERE except as a link in others' pedigrees, and Bresal only by retrojected king-list dates; (3) the saga setting of both men against Cormac mac Airt (3rd c.) is chronologically impossible - legend accretion on this very stretch. RULING: both stay NOTE-ONLY; the ceiling remains DUNLAING, on his four witness strands. Do not re-open without new primary-stratum evidence. ⚠ Name-collision trap: ENNA NIA (here, Ui Dunlainge) is NOT Enna Cennselach, the Ui Cheinnselaig eponym above Cairpre I100821 - AI summaries routinely link the wrong man and miscite the entry as 'U527.3' (it is U527.2). WIFE WIRED 8 Oct 2026 (Cuach I100844, ~✓ DIB + Cell Osnada coherence). *** CURRENT GRADE - READ FIRST (15 Sep 2026): PROTO-HISTORICAL EPONYM, HELD AT THE FRONTIER. His family is attested by FOUR independent strands (genealogies; Tripartite Life at Naas; the 490 battle tradition; AU U527.2 obit naming his son 'Illann son of Dunlang'); any kingship in his generation is RETROJECTED (~); above him NOTHING IS WIRED - Enna Nia and Bresal Belach stay note-only even though AU's obit-tail names them. Not 'the earliest documented ruler in Ireland' and never claimed as such. Layers below = audit trail in date order; read to the end before grading. *** ✓ DOCUMENTED (Source: the Uí Fáeláin / Uí Dúnlainge royal genealogy of Leinster, attested in the Irish Annals and the medieval tracts (Book of Leinster; Rawlinson B502 - Genelach h-Úa n-Dúnlainge); supplied 23 Jul 2026.): DUNLAING MAC ENDA NIADA (late 5th c.) - THE EPONYMOUS FOUNDER OF THE UI DUNLAINGE dynasty, said to be a contemporary of ST PATRICK. *** THE LEGEND FRONTIER ABOVE HIM = NOTE-ONLY: his father Enda Nia, then Bresal Belach, and CATHAIR MOR (legendary 2nd-c. High King and ancestor-deity of all the Laigin), Tuathal Techtmar, Ugaine Mor, back through the Milesian myth to Noah - kept note-only (as Milesius above Brian Boru, Cerdic above Alfred). Top of the wired Leinster royal spine. Direct ancestor. Added 23 Jul 2026. || DIB VERIFIED + REGRADED 15 Sep 2026 (Dictionary of Irish Biography 'Dunlaing' a2845, read first-hand at dib.ie): the DIB treats him soberly as the dynasty's eponymous ancestor - 'alleged role as ancestor', m. CUACH dau. of Coelbad of Ui Bairrche (an early Ui Dunlainge / mid-Leinster association the DIB itself draws), seven sons named incl. Illann (own DIB biography) and Ailill (our line). REGRADE, precise: (a) HIS EXISTENCE as proto-historical eponym-dynast - stands, DIB-treated; (b) the FILIATION Ailill son of Dunlaing - stands per DIB/genealogies; (c) any 'King of Leinster' STATUS in this generation - RETROJECTED per modern scholarship (the king-lists were later amended in Ui Dunlainge's interest; the dynasty's real supremacy dates from Faelan, 7th c.); (d) ABOVE him - Enna Nia stated as his father even by DIB, Bressal Belach 'allegedly' - but our frontier ALREADY excludes both, one rung MORE conservative than DIB. He is proto-historical, held with hedges, at the honest edge - NOT 'the earliest documented ruler in Ireland' (that title belongs to 6th-7th-c. figures like Diarmait mac Cerbaill nationally, and to FAELAN within this dynasty), and never claimed as such here. || The Tripartite Life's Naas episode (see Ailill I99679, added 15 Sep 2026) independently names Ailill and Illann as HIS sons and fixes Naas as the family's fort - a second witness strand for the filiation below him. || AU U527.2 (verified 15 Sep 2026): even the Annals of Ulster's obit for his son Illann carries 'son of Dunlang son of Ennae Nia son of Bresal Belach' - the filiation BELOW Dunlaing is annal-stratum, and the two names ABOVE him appear even in AU. THE FRONTIER RULING IS UNCHANGED: an obit's pedigree tail in a retrospectively compiled stratum is genealogical dressing, not wiring evidence - Ennae Nia and Bresal Belach stay note-only. But four independent strands (genealogies, Tripartite/Naas, battle tradition, AU obit) now agree on the same family, and that is as well-attested as any fifth-century house in these islands.
