About

Cuach, daughter of Coelbad of the Ui Bairrche of Mag Ailbe in south Kildare, was wife of Dunlaing and mother of three of his sons - Illann, Ailill and Eochaid - and her grateful husband, the tradition says, presented her with three ringforts, one for each. The two elder boys were the brothers St Patrick baptised at Naas, and when they fought at Cell Osnada in 490 it was beside Eochaid Guinech of their mother's own people.

Research notes

DIB RE-READ 9 Oct 2026 (full text, a2845): her father is NAMED - COELBAD, 'a dynast of Ui Bairrche of Mag Ailbe (south Co. Kildare)' - recorded here NOTE-ONLY, matching DIB's own hedged framing ('is said to have married Cuach'); DIB credits her with THREE sons (Illann, Ailill, Eochaid - the three-ringforts story) and lists half-brothers by other mothers (Fergus, Nad Buidb, Dubthach Lethderg, Moenach - ancestors of minor lineages, not wired). DIB's overall register ('alleged role as ancestor... it is claimed') matches the standing grades: filiations ✓-per-genealogies, pre-Faelan kingships ~ retrojected. ~✓ DIB-STATED (dib.ie a2845 'Dunlaing', read first-hand 15 Sep 2026: Dunlaing m. Cuach of Ui Bairrche, sons Illann + Ailill) + INTERNAL-COHERENCE STRAND (the Cell Osnada alliance with Eochaid Guinech of Ui Bairrche = her sept, noted 15 Sep). Mother of AILILL (I99679, our line). Her own parentage NOTE-ONLY. Wired 8 Oct 2026 (Ui Dunlainge maternal audit - the audit's ONE wirable yield; see Murchad mac Brain Mut I99672 for the Conchenn stepmother-trap negative).
