Alan fitz Flaald was a Breton lord who came over with the Norman kings and received Oswestry; from one of his sons descend the FitzAlan Earls of Arundel in this tree, and from another, Walter, Steward of Scotland, the royal House of Stewart. One Breton father behind both an English earldom and a line of kings.

✓ ALAN FITZ FLAALD (fl. c.1100), of Breton origin (Dol), granted Oswestry - CP 1st edn says by the Conqueror, the modern authorities under HENRY I; father of William FitzAlan (our line) and of WALTER FITZ ALAN, 1st High Steward of Scotland, ancestor of the STEWART KINGS - so this tree and the royal Stewarts share this common ancestor (the Stewart descent is via Walter, NOT our line: kinship, not descent). DOCUMENTED FLOOR: his father Flaald, hereditary steward of Dol in Brittany, and the generations above are semi-legendary and left unwired.
