About
Alice de Clare married Aubrey de Vere the second, Master Chamberlain of England, and survived him after he was killed in a London riot in 1141. She was a daughter of Gilbert FitzRichard, Lord of Clare, sister of the first Earl of Pembroke and aunt of the first two Earls of Hertford. She is the point at which the house of Clare enters the Oxford line, and so the point at which this family's two great medieval descents become one.

Wife of Aubrey de Vere II; survived him 22 years in widowhood and became a nun at ST OSYTH'S PRIORY (her son the Bishop: "Ositha mater mea..."); benefactress of St Osyth's and Colne.
