About
Bermudo the Second of Leon, called the Gouty, had the misfortune to reign opposite Almanzor at the terrible height of his power: Leon's cities burned, Compostela itself was sacked, and the king - too crippled at the end to sit a horse - was carried on a litter through the wreck of his realm, dying in 999 just before the tide turned. He married Elvira Garcia of Castile, knotting the two houses this tree descends from.
