About
Charles III 'the Simple' (879-929), King of West Francia, made one of the most consequential bargains of the Middle Ages: by the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 he settled the Viking chief Rollo; also our ancestor; on the lower Seine, creating Normandy. 'Simple' meant straightforward, not foolish, but it did not save him: deposed in 923, he died a prisoner at Péronne. Through his English queen Eadgifu he was father of Louis IV, our ancestor.
