About
Ealhswith of Mercia (d.902) was the wife of Alfred the Great, daughter of the Mercian ealdorman Æthelred Mucel; a marriage that helped bind Wessex and Mercia in the generation that saved England. Self-effacing in life (she never used the title queen, by West Saxon custom), she founded the Nunnaminster at Winchester in her widowhood; a court poet called her 'the true and dear lady of the English'. Her children included Edward the Elder and Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians.

Stevenson, archive.org, read this day): Alfred married the daughter of AETHELRED MUCILL, EALDORMAN OF THE GAINI, her mother EADBURH 'of the royal stock of the king of the Mercians' (Stevenson index p.499: Eadburh 'wife of AEthelred Mucill... mother-in-law of Alfred'). A ninth-century biographer naming both parents - the same evidence class as Orderic for the Grandmesnils.
