About
Edward le Despenser, son of the hanged favourite by Eleanor de Clare, fell in the fighting at Morlaix in Brittany in 1342, one of the first English gentlemen to die in the Hundred Years War. He had married Anne de Ferrers of Groby seven years earlier, and in his son's generation the family the gallows had ruined was rebuilt into one of the great houses of the realm.
