About
Elizabeth Rothe of the Kilkenny merchant dynasty buried three husbands in the crown's Irish service: Henry Davells, killed by rebels in 1579; Humphrey Mackworth, killed after him; and Sir Warham St Leger, killed in single combat in 1600. The leases and law-papers track her through her aliases - Ellice alias Elizabeth Rothe alias Macworthe, then dame Elizabeth St Leger, widow - a woman who outlasted the wars that consumed her husbands, dying in 1620. Her daughter Dorothy Kingsmill carries this line.
