About

Ferdinand I 'the Great' (c.1015-1065), King of León and Count of Castile, united the two realms by sword and marriage and pushed the Reconquest to the Mondego, taking Coimbra with the banner of St James. He set the taifa kings to paying him tribute; the parias that funded a golden age; and had St Isidore's relics translated to León, where he died in a penitent's habit. He then divided everything among his children, whose wars are the Cid's story. Ours runs through Alfonso VI.
