About

Henry Jones, always Harry, was born in 1830 and was still a minor when the Encumbered Estates Court sold Drombeg over his head in April 1852: the court's own title page calls him a minor, while the schedule of the property styles him Esquire and in possession, so the document contradicts itself on the same day. He married Eliza Hester Smyth at Glandore in 1861, residence Drombeg, and the family stayed in the house for another ninety years. He died in 1890.

Research notes

[DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER.] Note added 24 Jul 2026, drawn from Tu Ne Cede Malis v3.3 and the trade-book chapters. Deceased; the living-person rule does not apply.

Baptism: Baptism Rincurran 30 December 1830: confirms the 1830 birth and resolves the 1852 Encumbered Estates rental styling him "a Minor": he came of age about fourteen weeks before the 2 April 1852 auction, the matter having been opened during his minority. Added Jul 2026.

Death: Calendar of Wills & Administrations (Ireland) 1890: "Henry Jones late of Drombeg, Glandore, County Cork, Gentleman" died 30 May 1890 at same place; administration granted at Cork to Eliza Jones, the widow; effects 614 pounds 8s. Supersedes a "13 May 1890, Skibbereen" date taken from an online tree.

Marriage: Belfast Newsletter, 1861: "Jones and Smith - December 31, at Glandore Church, by the Rev. Wm. Murphy, assisted by the Rev. Richard Jones, Henry Jones, Esq., Drombeg, to Eliza, daughter of the Rev. John R. Smyth, of Castle Dooneen, both in the County Cork." This is the Jones-Smyth junction (the Smyth of Castle Dooneen line).
