Henry Newport Edward Jones

1926 Census: age 24, single, b. Blackrock, Cork, assisting on his father's farm at Drombeg. Brother of Alice Dorothy Jones. Later Master of the SS Blythmoor (Runciman Shipping Co., Newcastle-on-Tyne): COMMENDED, supplement to the London Gazette, 24 May 1940, pp. 3170-3171 (copies in family papers), for his handling of the unarmed Blythmoor under Luftwaffe air attack off Flamborough Head - attack signal sent, zig-zag at full speed, helm hard over through repeated runs, two bomb hits, crew stood by the boats at full speed until the enemy gave up; he "resumed his course and brought his ship safely to port" (Gazette's words). The Blythmoor was later lost at Narvik (10 Apr 1940) under a subsequent master (the IWM holds the Narvik journal of Capt. D. J. Nicholas as her master there), so Harry had left her before the Norway run; the earlier note placing Harry himself at Narvik is corrected accordingly. (Death recorded ~1952.)

Birth: The "Mar 1902" (from an online tree) conflicts with sister Alice Dorothy's birth of 22 Nov 1902 - full siblings cannot be 8 months apart. Henry was the elder (age 9 vs 8 in the 1911 census), so he was likely born ~1901; confirm with his own birth cert.

Marriage: C of E marriage register p.35 no.69: Henry Newport Edward Jones, 28, bachelor, Master Mariner, of Station Road, Sharpness, son of Richard William Jones (Farmer), to Mildred Thompson, 24, music teacher, dau. of Richard Thompson (shipwright). Witnesses: Richard Herbert Jones (the groom's brother) and Richard Thompson.
