About
Hildegard (c.754-783), Queen of the Franks, was Charlemagne's best-loved wife: married at about thirteen, she bore him nine children in twelve years; among them Louis the Pious and Pepin of Italy, both our ancestors; and travelled with his court from campaign to campaign, dying at twenty-eight. Of Alemannic ducal blood through her mother, she linked the new dynasty to the old. Charlemagne endowed churches for her soul across the empire.
