About
Isabel de Clare, Countess of Pembroke in her own right, was the daughter and heiress of Strongbow and Aoife, and so heiress of Leinster and Pembroke both. She was reckoned the greatest marriage prize of her age, and in 1189 Richard the First gave her to William Marshal, a landless knight of forty-odd who thereby became one of the richest men in the kingdom. It was among the best bargains either of them made.
