About
John de Balliol of Barnard Castle quarrelled with the Bishop of Durham, and the penance imposed on him - the support of poor scholars at Oxford - became, under his widow's steady endowment, Balliol College, which has now outlived every castle the family held. He died in 1268; his son was the King of Scots whom Edward I made and broke. This line descends through his daughter's line into the Comyns, carrying the blood of the college's founder and the humiliated king's father. His parents Hugh de Balliol and Cecily de Fontaines, and grandparents Eustace and Petronilla, are now in the tree above him.
