About
Louis the Stammerer, King of West Francia, reigned for eighteen months between his formidable father Charles the Bald and his own divided sons, a gentle, pious interlude in a violent dynasty. Contemporaries remembered that at his coronation he gave away nearly everything that was asked of him. He married Adelaide of Paris, and his posthumous son Charles the Simple carried the Carolingian line onward - and, through Eadgifu of Wessex, into the shortest of this family's roads to Alfred the Great.
