About
Matilda of Flanders was Queen of England and the wife of William the Conqueror. She is the door through which two further crowns enter this family: her ancestors, the counts of Flanders, married a daughter of Alfred the Great in one generation and a granddaughter of Charlemagne two generations earlier, so that both the house of Wessex and the Carolingians stand behind her.
