About
Ramon Berenguer I 'the Old' (1023-1076), Count of Barcelona, bought the counties of Carcassonne and Razès outright; gold from the taifa tributes; and presided over the earliest compilation of the Usatges, the customary law of Barcelona that ranks among Europe's first territorial law codes. Under him parias gold made Barcelona rich and its count the master of the other Catalan counts. Our line runs through his son Cap d'Estopes.
