Robert I the Magnificent

Robert the First of Normandy, called the Magnificent and by his enemies the Devil, ruled the duchy for eight years and died on pilgrimage returning from Jerusalem. He left one son, born to a woman he never married, and made his barons swear to accept the boy. The boy was seven years old, and he was William the Conqueror.
