About

Sir Leonard Hastings of Kirby Muxloe in Leicestershire, retainer of Richard, Duke of York, married Alice Camoys and died in 1455 on the eve of the wars his patron began. His son William, Lord Hastings, became Edward IV's chamberlain and closest friend, and was beheaded without trial in the Tower in June 1483, the most famous single victim of Richard of Gloucester's seizure of power. This line descends from Leonard's daughter Elizabeth, who married Sir John Donne - the couple who kneel to this day in Memling's Donne Triptych in the National Gallery, painted with their daughter beside them.
