William Kingsmill

William Kingsmill, M.P., of Ballybeg Abbey, co. Cork - father of Levina (m. Matthew Pennefather; our line), through whom Balyowen/New Park came to the Pennefathers. DOCUMENTED FAMILY ORIGIN (Burke's LGI 'Kingsmill of Hermitage Park' pp.369-70, read 23 Jul 2026) - recorded NOTE-ONLY, the Ballybeg-branch bridge not yet cleanly wired: the family's original name was CASTLEMAYNE, of Basingstoke, Hants (12th-16th c.), who took the name KINGSMILL from a grant of the ROYAL MILL there. Richard Kingsmill of Doberton Manor (d.1511) HOSTED CATHERINE OF ARAGON at Basingstoke, 4 Nov 1501, on her way to marry Prince Arthur; his descendants = KINGSMILL OF SYDMONTON COURT, Hants (Sir John d.1556 × Constance Goring; William d.1592; Sir William kt at the Charterhouse 1603, entertained James I at Sydmonton 1603). A younger Kingsmill went to Ireland under Carew c.1601-2, acquired lands incl. BALLYBEG ABBEY, co. Cork, and was knighted at Dublin 1603 - the Ballybeg founder, ~2 generations above our William. The article gives the English house entire: originally CASTLEMAYNE, of the Royal Mill at Basingstoke since the 12th c., whence the name; Richard Kingsmill, bailiff of Basingstoke 1456; his son Richard of Doberton Manor ENTERTAINED CATHERINE OF ARAGON for a night, 4 Nov 1501, on her way to marry Prince Arthur; SIR JOHN KINGSMILL, Judge of the Common Pleas (d.1509) m. Jane, dau. of Sir John Giffard of Itchell; down to SIR WILLIAM KINGSMILL of Sydmonton, Sheriff of Hants 1564 (d.1592) m. BRIDGET, dau. of George RALEIGH of Thornburgh, Warwick - whose 6TH SON, ⭐ SIR FRANCIS KINGSMILL (bapt. Kingsclere 6 Jan 1570), served in Ireland under Sir George Carew 1601-2, ACQUIRED BALLYBEG ABBEY, co. Cork, was knighted at Dublin March 1603, and d. 25 July 1620 'leaving issue' - which issue the article does NOT carry down. The De Burgh page supplies the middle: Bp ULYSSES BURGH of Ardagh m. 1663 MARY, dau. of COL. WILLIAM KINGSMILL of BALLYOWEN, co. Tipperary - Ballyowen being the very estate (renamed New Park) our William was heir to. WORKING SHAPE, grade ~, NOT wired: Sir Francis (Ballybeg, d.1620) -> Col. William of Ballyowen (fl.1663) -> WILLIAM M.P. of Ballybeg & Ballyowen (this record). Both seats converge on our man; one or two filiation documents (Carew-era grants, Kingsmill wills, the Ballyowen deeds) close it. If closed, the line runs to the Sydmonton Kingsmills, a Raleigh grandmother, and the judge who hosted Catherine of Aragon. ||⭐ BALLYBEG BRIDGE CLOSED 6 Aug 2026|| The LGI 1912 edition ('Bruce-Kingsmill of Hermitage Park', printed p.235 - found by archive.org full-text sweep; the 1899 edition omitted the Irish generations) prints him in full: 'WILLIAM, of BALLYBEG ABBEY, co. Cork, M.P. for Mallow 1634-41, one of the 1649 officers, m. Dorothy Jane, dau. of Sir Warren St. Leger, and d. 1650' - son of SIR FRANCIS KINGSMILL (now wired, I100265), with issue: William of Mallow (m. 1683 Susanna Myers, whence the Kilkenny and CANADIAN branches), John, Thomas (Sheriff of Cork 1697, d.1702), Sydney, MARY (m. ULYSSES DE BURGH, Bp of Ardagh - the De Burgh article's 'Col. William Kingsmill of Ballyowen' = this same man, both estates) and LEVINA (m. MATTHEW PENNEFATHER, 'heir of Ballyowen, aft. New Park' per the 1912 Pennefather article p.418). Three articles interlock; the line now runs to the Sydmonton Kingsmills, a Raleigh grandmother, and - by his aunt Dorothea - to SAMUEL PEPYS as first-cousin-by-marriage of Levina.
