Research notes

✓ JANE, dau. of SIR JOHN GIFFARD of ITCHELL, Hants - ⚠ STIRNET CALLS HER JOAN; the HAMPSHIRE VISITATION CALLS HER JANE - 'Jane d. of Sr John Gifford of ECHILL in Com. Southton' - so the visitation agrees with Burke's against Stirnet, and JANE STANDS. Echill, Itchell, Ishill and Ichell are one place. Jane and Joan were in any case freely interchangeable in this period and no separate woman is implied. Source: THE VISITATIONS OF HAMPSHIRE, 1530, 1575 and 1622-34 (Harleian Society), 'Kingsmill' pedigree at pp.2-3, from MS Harl. 1544 fo.5-7; page images read 7 Aug 2026. A HERALDS' VISITATION - primary heraldic evidence, taken from the family at the time, and a materially better authority than any nineteenth-century printed pedigree. wife of Sir John Kingsmill, Judge of the Common Pleas (d.1509); mother of Sir John of Sydmonton Court (I100385, our line). ⚠ NO CONNECTION IS ASSERTED to the Norman GIFFARDS already in this tree (Walter Giffard I99592, Gilbert Giffard I99971) - those are eleventh-century and a different problem entirely. The Giffards of Itchell are a Hampshire gentry family and must be proved on their own evidence. Source: Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, 'KINGSMILL OF HERMITAGE PARK' p.307, PAGE IMAGE read 7 Aug 2026 (an earlier edition than the 1912 text swept by OCR on 6 Aug - note the different pagination). ||UPDATE 8 Aug 2026 - THE GIFFORD ROYAL DOOR: CLOSED|| Abbott's printed royal descent (The Genealogist n.s.12 (1896) 76-78: Edward I - Brotherton - Segrave - Mowbray - Welles - Poynings - Paulet - Eleanor Paulet m. Sir William Gifford - 'granddaughter' Joan m. Kingsmill) is BROKEN: per Michael Bodman (FMG, citing Gary Boyd Roberts, The Genealogist [US] 1(1) 1980, 106-27), Jane/Joan was the SISTER of the William Gifford who m. Eleanor Paulet, not his granddaughter - the Paulet royal blood belongs to William's descendants, the LATER Itchell Giffords, not to Jane. Abbott had grabbed a 'Joane' two generations too late from the Gifford visitation pedigree (chronologically impossible: Jane's marriage indenture is dated 1 Aug 1490, and she is named in the Judge's will, dated 14 Mar 1508/9, pr. 20 May 1509). Corroboration of the sibling reading: William Gifford (d.1548/9) named his 'nephew Kingsmill' in his will. Her father = the John Giffard who held Itchel from 1461, d. bef. 23 Sep 1506 (VCH Hants iv, Crondall); her MOTHER unrecorded - 'Agnes Winslow' (Watney, Wallop Family p.363) is plausible-unverified ~, and the 'Thomas Giffard x Eleanor Vaux' parents on tree sites are a GRAFT from the unrelated Giffards of Twyford, Bucks - TRAP, never import. NO ROYAL BLOOD enters by this marriage on any present evidence.
