About
Jane Hunt was born at Curragh Chase in County Limerick and married John Hamilton Lane of Lanespark, in Tipperary, in 1783. She was a younger daughter of a comfortable Limerick gentry family and, on the face of it, an unremarkable match in a world of such matches. She is in fact the most important woman in this family's history. Everything her husband's people claimed about their grand English cousins turned out to be unprovable; everything nobody thought to ask about hers turned out to be true. Through her mother's and father's families the line runs back to the Earls of Oxford, to Domesday Book, and to the Norman and Gaelic royal houses. Nobody appears to have noticed for two hundred years, because she was an in-law, and nobody chases in-laws.
