About

Malcolm III 'Canmore' (r.1058-1093), King of Scots, avenged his father Duncan by defeating and killing Macbeth in 1057, and reigned thirty-five years. His second marriage, to the English princess St Margaret; made when her family took refuge in Scotland after the Norman Conquest; brought the blood of Alfred's house into the Scottish line and a saint into the family. He invaded England five times and died on the fifth, ambushed at Alnwick in 1093. Our descent runs through his and Margaret's children.

Research notes

✓ DOCUMENTED (web-confirmed 25 Jul 2026): MALCOLM III CANMORE ('Cenn Mor'), KING OF SCOTS (r. 1058-1093) - took the throne after defeating Macbeth and Lulach; m. (2ndly) the English princess St Margaret; killed at Alnwick 1093. Son of Duncan I (the House of Dunkeld above him note-only, extendable). Father of David I AND of Matilda of Scotland (our line - both routes converge here). Direct ancestor. Added 25 Jul 2026. ||27 Oct 2026 - RING|| ✓ Second line of descent wired: his eldest son Duncan II, King of Scots (k. 1094), by an earlier, unrecorded wife or partner (the Saga's Ingibjorg of Orkney is not asserted) - William of Malmesbury calls Duncan illegitimate. Duncan's son William fitz Duncan m. Alice de Rumilly; their daughter Amabel, Lady of Egremont, m. Reynold de Lucy, and the line runs Lucy - Multon of Egremont - Joan de Multon (Lady FitzWalter, I101196). So this tree descends from Malcolm Canmore both through St Margaret (David I) and through his first family.
