About
[CORRECTED 15 Oct 2026: Isolt was NOT a Mortimer but a daughter of ROGER LE RUS or ROUS (Complete Peerage I pp.347-348, Audley of Stratton Audley, as corrected in vol. XIV - medievalgenealogy.org.uk/cp/audley.shtml and /mortimer.shtml); she m. (1) Sir Walter de Balun of Much Marcle, co. Hereford (living and married to her 1286/7), (2) before 7 Jan 1293, probably 1288, Hugh Audley the elder; she brought him Eastington, co. Gloucester, and Thornbury, co. Hereford; living 1336. CP I pp.347-348 (1910 text) calls her daughter of Edmund de Mortimer by Margaret de Fiennes, resting on an undated charter granting Arley to her and Balun; that is chronologically impossible (Edmund married Margaret c.1285, Isolt was already Balun's wife by 1286/7) and was withdrawn in CP XIV. Father wired; the old Mortimer reading below is superseded.] Isolt de Mortimer, wife of Hugh de Audley the elder, was mother of the Hugh who married a Clare heiress; the Complete Peerage records her, though her own filiation is left open.
Research notes
ISOLT DE MORTIMER, wife of Hugh de Audley sr; mother of Hugh jr (our line) per CP - her own Mortimer filiation is DEBATED (~), note-only above; do not graft her onto the main Mortimers without a document. Added 14 Sep 2026.
