Research notes

✓ Margaret, wife (before 1334) of Adam, 3rd Lord Welles, d. before him and buried in the Lady Chapel at Greenfield; mother of John, 4th Lord. Her surname is not proven: the Complete Peerage says she 'may have been a da. of Thomas (Bardolf), 2nd Lord Bardolf' (her son's godfather was Sir John Bardolf, perhaps his maternal uncle); Burke (Dormant & Extinct Peerages) calls her daughter of John, Lord Bardolf. Bardolf parentage NOT wired. Complete Peerage vol. I pp.418-419 (BARDOLF; pages supplied by Aynsley) gives Thomas, 2nd Lord Bardolf (1282-1328) m. Agnes, perhaps daughter of William de Grandson by Blanche of Savoy, but names no daughters - so it neither confirms nor excludes Margaret. Context: John, 3rd Lord Bardolf (b. 1312) - the Sir John Bardolf who was godfather of her son John, 4th Lord Welles, and his probable maternal uncle - m. 1326 Elizabeth, only daughter and heir of Roger Damory by Elizabeth de Clare (daughter of Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester, and Joan of Acre), who brought him large estates in Dorset. If Margaret was a Bardolf, Roger Damory's daughter was her sister-in-law: a marriage connection to the Welles line, NOT a descent. Source: Complete Peerage vol. XII pt. 2, pp. 436-441, article WELLES (pages supplied by Aynsley, 15 Oct 2026), citing the records named.
